Maya and her friends–all of whom have supernatural powers–have been kidnapped after fleeing from a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set, and after a terrifying helicopter crash they find themselves pursued by evildoers in the Vancouver Island wilderness.

This Blonde’s Review:
In the first book we’re introduced to Maya, Daniel, Rafe, and the other teens. In book two we are dropped into the middle of the action from the first book. This is a book you will be too lost to read if you haven’t read the first book. If you have you’ll want a refresher or a good memory.

After the forest fire forces the group of teens to flee they find their helicopter crash landing miles from civilization. Maya leads her friends through the forest in search of safety. It can’t be too easy for them, since they’re also trying to avoid the strange men who are after them.

Maya knows about her abilities, even if she hasn’t fully accepted them. She’s still miles ahead of her friends, including Daniel, who don’t know about the powers they have. As they travel through the wilderness together they will learn to rely on the powers they didn’t know they had. They have to trust each other to survive.

Maya was a character I enjoyed getting to know in the first book and I enjoyed getting back into her story. In book one we were able to see her close friendship to Daniel and wonder if their relationship was one that could move to the next level. In this book we get a stronger image of the type of friendship they have. He’s been portrayed as the strong, moral, supportive friend and he doesn’t disappoint in this book either. He’s one we can love and want great things for.

The Calling felt like a middle book in the series. It gave us more information about our characters and gave us many more questions we’d want the answers to. We’ve been set up to want the third book right away so we can get those answers and get to the real action Right Now.

If reading a book set in the modern day world filled with teens who aren’t as average as they believe sounds interesting you’ll like the characters you find in The Calling. If watching what they’ll do to survive and make their way home despite the odds against them sounds like your idea of a good book then you should pick this one up today.
