Cara has always dreamed of being a Populazzi, one of the popular crowd. But it’s not until she changes schools that she gets a shot at it, thanks to her best friend Claudia’s crazy plan. The idea is simple: The rungs of The Ladder are relationships. First get a boyfriend who’s ranked low, then climb up through more boyfriends until you’re not just one of the Populazzi, but the Supreme Populazzi. Yet what starts off as a fairy tale turns into a somewhat dark comedy of errors. Just when Cara reaches the top, her life hits rock bottom. She wonders why she wanted to be popular in the first place—and if there’s any way to live happily ever after now..
This Blonde’s Review:
At the start of each school year Cara always believes that This Year will be different. Year after year, it has been the same. But this time… it really will be different. Because Cara switched schools. No one knows who she is or expects her to fit into a certain rung of the social ladder.
Using her best friend Claudia’s plan Cara uses boys to climb the social ladder. A cooler boy can bring his girlfriend up to the notice of other guys who are more popular. Sooner than she expects Cara finds herself as part of the Populazzi. She has to make choices about what she does and how she treats people, and figure out if she’s still herself or has changed into someone she doesn’t know anymore.
Things don’t go easily for Cara once she makes it big in high school. She has a boyfriend who isn’t really interested in her. Her stepfather is horrendous and her mother is spineless and allows him to treat her that way. She is part of the Populazzi but wants more. Now she wants to be the Supreme Populazzi. When she gets there she discovers that popularity isn’t the best thing in life.
We can predict where this is going, and which boy Cara should Really be with, but the book is still an enjoyable one.
If you like books with girls who want to be more popular and have to learn who they really are, then you should give Elise Allen’s Populazzi a try.
