The Oracle of Dating
By Allison van Diepen
No one at Kayla’s school knows she’s the famous Oracle of Dating—the anonymous queen of dating advice, given through her own Web site. Kayla doesn’t even have a boyfriend. Two relationship disasters were enough to make her focus on everyone else’s love life. But then her advice backfires on her own best friend. And Kayla starts to seriously obsess about Jared Stewart—the very cute, very mysterious new guy in school. Suddenly, the teen queen of advice needs her own oracle of dating–and she knows just where to find one…
This Blonde’s Review:
Well, I just meant to Start reading this book tonight and instead finished the whole thing. It’s somehow short at 192 pages, but definitely worth the read. We have Kayla, who is our Oracle of Dating. She has good instincts about people, and uses common sense rather than just being swept away by emotions. This comes in handy with her sister’s romantic life and leads to her relationship advice website. She chooses Not to date herself, seeing most high school boys as immature and unsure of what they want. Then she meets a cute new boy, Jared. She’s unsure of her feelings, his feelings, and is in unfamiliar territory. One of her best friends asks the Oracle for advise and it backfires. So between the two, she starts to wonder if giving advice is something she should be doing.
The only downside to this story is that some people will not appreciate the casual mentions of underage drinking. They do mention drinking and getting drunk, including making out with a stranger after drinking. The drinking level does not lead to crazy dangerous activity, but there is also no later twist to the story to show underage drinking is wrong. I did not find it offensive myself, since she didn’t make it a huge part of the story, it was just something that happens some weekends. But some people would not like it, so if that’s something you strong disapprove of, you may not like this book. If you can appreciate the great story of friendship and crushes, then you’ll still love the book.
This is a cute story with tons of Solid dating advice thrown in. I immediately thought of My sister and her dating troubles and how she reminds me of Tracy. Makes me want to get her to sit down and read this book as well! It’s a very cute story, and well written. I recently discovered there is a Second due out, and hopefully I’ll be giving a review of The Oracle Rebounds, which I’m sure is going to be another great story. Based on The Oracle of Dating, I can’t wait to read it. This story will make you feel good inside when you’re done with it, and make you wish it lasted longer than the 192 pages.
Be sure to check out my review of book two, The Oracle Rebounds
